Close-up of crater caused by artesian fountains that erupted immediately after main shock of 1983 Borah Peak earthquake, Thousand Springs Valley. These fountains are generally circular to elliptical in shape, 2-5 meters in diameter, and 2-4 meters deep. The light- colored sandy gravel that forms rim and apron around crater was washed from crater during flow of fountains. 2.8 meter rod for scale. Sec. 31, T. 9 N., R. 22 E. Chilly Buttes. Custer County, Idaho. November 9, 1983.
